Article: Hayward considering shoreline radio towers

HAYWARD -- Four radio towers on a former landfill could help the city build a new main library, but opponents say the 199-foot-tall structures aren't right for the shoreline at the end of West Winton Avenue.

The City Council will hold a public hearing on the matter at its Tuesday meeting and could give it the go-ahead.

The four towers would be used by Salem Communications for broadcasting KNTS, an AM talk radio station. It currently has one tower broadcasting out of Palo Alto, but would reach more listeners if allowed to build in Hayward.

Salem would lease the land for $60,000 a year, and also agreed to pay a one-time fee of $5 million for permission to build. According to a staff report, ...
