'Copters cost too much

Montgomery County Council members are balking at the price of two helicopters requested by the police department. Police officials say helicopters would be a vital tool to help them track down criminals and missing people and would reduce the risks from high-speed chases. They say Montgomery County is the only large jurisdiction in the area without an air unit. But Council President Phil Andrews and others say the county can't afford the $7.9 million investment. The county is facing a projected $370 million shortfall next year. County Executive Ike Leggett supports obtaining the helicopters.
