NEW HAVEN -- By 1 p.m. Thursday, some 500 customers had perused the aisles of New Haven's newest retail store, scooping up Gucci bags and clothes by Prada and Kenneth Cole, along with electric knives, dressers, collectibles, jewelry and dishware.

Shoppers also enjoyed cheese, crackers, fresh fruit, coffee and juice after checkout.

As upscale as the atmosphere and products were, this wasn't the opening of a typical department store, but rather the opening of the flagship Goodwill store of the region.
