1st Ld-Writethru: Chinese shares gain 2.6 pct led by energy heavyweights

BEIJING, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese equities rebounded with the Shanghai Composite Index rising 2.6 percent Wednesday to the highest close since June 2008.

Energy stocks drove the gains on expectations that an economic recovery will fuel power demand, dealers said.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index closed at 3,296.62 points, up 83.41 points. The Shenzhen Component Index closed at 13,353.21 points, up 176 points, or 1.34 percent.

Combined turnover shrank to 306.79 billion yuan (44.92 billion U.S. dollars) from 345.91 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers by 749 to 113 in Shanghai ...
