After a lifetime of working with engines and machines, David W. Schlueter found a new and unexpected career as a metal artist.

Schlueter began creating one-of-a-kind wrought-iron and metalwork tables and pieces, selling his work at the Lakefront Festival of Arts and other venues.

He also kept making the most of a second chance at life.

"I gave him a kidney 30 years ago," said his brother, Karl Schlueter. "The transplant people came and talked to him and were impressed at how long he had that kidney."

Schlueter died Wednesday of complications from cancer treatment. He was 69. Schlueter long lived in St. Francis.

After the kidney transplant, he was ready to live again.
