RFP for Sphinx reissued
The Baltimore Development Corp. has failed to find a suitable
developer for West Baltimore's historic Sphinx Club, and has
reissued its request for proposals on the site. Located at 2101-
2103 Pennsylvania Ave., along what was once known as "The Avenue,"
or Baltimore historic African-American entertainment district, the
club once hosted famous jazz acts such as Billie Holliday and Cab
Calloway. Nightclubs, theaters and restaurants including the Sphinx
once anchored this community, but the neighborhood has suffered from
disinvestment in the past decade, with a growing number of vacant
