Article: Imperial Tobacco finding success in new markets

IMPERIAL Tobacco is forecasting a "successful" 2009 despite the economic downturn and falls in its sales in the UK and across the Continent.

However, the Bristol-based firm which bought its French-Spanish rival Altadis last year was still bullish when it published a trading report yesterday.

While trading has declined in Europe, sales in other parts of the world increased as the firm has increased its brand presence as a result of the multimillion-pound takeover.

The company said in the UK market decline had slowed in recent months with a fall in customers buying UK brands abroad as the impact of a weaker economy took effect and also because of the weakness of the pound against the euro.
