Some state lawmakers say they are eager to enact a package of tax
breaks to steer the NUMMI plant in Fremont away from oblivion -- but
at least one of the proposals broke down in the Legislature in
recent years.
Separately, union officials have been told by plant managers that
it appears enough demand exists to keep the New United Motor
Manufacturing Inc. factory in operation until October.
And negotiations between NUMMI and United Auto Workers Local
2244, which represents UAW members at the NUMMI plant, will be
extended by five days beyond the prior expiration date of Aug. 8.
