Scotland needs to get its act together or face squandering the legacy of The Gathering

RELIABLE and sensible shoes they may be, but Hush Puppies do not go terribly well with a kilt. Neither do wellies - and as for the man in the kilt, jacket and flat cap...

For cynics, there was much sport to be had at The Gathering. It was easy, too easy, to find someone with a booming American accent looking for all the world like he was heading to a Bannockburn re- enactment, feathers flying in his bunnet as he strode along.

And yet, amid the sneers, it was hard not to be caught up in the sense of occasion that these visitors felt. The earnestness of their passion for all things Scottish was coupled ...
