As Main Street businesses founder in the sluggish economy, some
Long Island villages and towns have decided the time has come to
allow outside dining at restaurants.
This spring, the harborfront village of Northport changed its
code, permitting restaurants to put tables outside, while the town
of Southampton unanimously adopted legislation allowing sidewalk
dining at restaurants in the hamlets of Bridgehampton, Hampton Bays,
Water Mill and East Quogue.
"The idea was brought to me, and it hadn't been suggested
before," said Christopher Nuzzi, a Southampton town councilman who
