Scott Hassett, former secretary of the Department of Natural
Resources, has joined the ranks of those who favor the idea of
having the Natural Resources Board appoint the DNR secretary. That's
a good side to be on, and it's one favored by legislators, other
former DNR secretaries, conservation and environmental groups, many
hunters and anglers and this newspaper.
And it's a position once favored by Gov. Jim Doyle. He should
change his mind and return to his original position. But even if he
doesn't, legislators should press ahead with a bill that would make
the change and make sure they have enough votes to override a
possible veto.
