Article: DeStefano gets party's nod to run for ninth term as mayor?

NEW HAVEN -- As expected, Democratic Mayor John DeStefano Jr. secured his party's endorsement Tuesday for a ninth term, along with Town/City Clerk Ronald Smith and candidates for aldermen in all 30 wards.

In his acceptance speech, DeStefano outlined plans to reform city schools, the main platform of his campaign and a major focus of his past year in office.

"It's time to close the achievement gap among our children; it's time to do even more, much more, to reduce the rate of high school dropouts. It's time to see that all our kids have the chance to go to college, and it's time to see to it that once they reach college, they graduate," DeStefano said.
