The Rev. Leslie A. Branch, 66, a Catholic priest who was the
first African American Catholic chaplain in the Navy and was also a
parish priest and high school guidance counselor in Washington, died
June 22 at Specialty Hospital of Washington-Hadley. Father Branch,
who had been a quadriplegic for years after surgery for a spinal
condition, died of complications from colon surgery.
Leslie Anthony Branch, a Washington native, was a graduate of
Archbishop Carroll High School in the District. He attended Morgan
State University in Baltimore and graduated from Mount St. Mary's
University in Emmitsburg, Md., before he was ordained a priest in
1971.
