EU, PNG sign trade, development agreement

BRUSSELS, July 30 (Xinhua) -- The European Union and Papua New Guinea signed on Wednesday the interim Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), which was first initialled at the end of 2007.

Fiji also initialled the agreement in 2007 but decided to sign at a later stage, according to the EU's executive Commission.

The agreement focuses on trade in goods and includes important provisions on rules of origin for the fisheries sector.

"This agreement is an important step towards a strong and lasting EU-Pacific trade and development partnership," said EU Trade Commissioner Catherine Ashton in a statement issued after the signing ceremony.
