Jaime Matos was on the verge of being sentenced in a Highland slaying in March 2008, when he unexpectedly confessed in open court to killing another man in Fontana.

Matos was sentenced anyways to 90 years to life in the shooting death of 17-year-old Jose Orozco, but Fontana police checked it out and learned Matos may have been telling the truth.

Matos was sentenced Friday morning in the shooting death of Jose Ayala, whose body was found on the sidewalk about 4 a.m. on Dec. 22, 2005m near Oleander Avenue, north of Merrill Avenue in Fontana. The sentencing hearing is scheduled to take place in Fontana Superior Court.
