Proponents of lacrosse call it the fastest growing sport in
America, citing statistics that show a 500% increase in youth
participation over the last 10 years.
Among student-athletes in the Milwaukee area, the sport's growth
certainly reflects that national trend.
This year, the state fielded 30 high school boys teams, 15 prep
girls teams and 20 college club men's teams, including one at the
Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Sidney Jones, an assistant coach at MSOE, also serves as head
coach of the successful Milwaukee Select U-18 team. Milwaukee Select
went 28-1 this season, including national tournament victories in
Chicago and South Bend, Ind.
