Last week I was picking squash, and out of the blue, I heard a
loud whirring.
I jumped up and spotted a tiny bird hovering above a scarlet
runner bean. Its iridescent feathers gleamed in the sunlight. In a
flash, it was gone.
This was the first and only hummingbird I've encountered all
summer. Like many other gardeners, I'd love to see more.
"They are amazing little creatures," says Jackie Betts of Prices
Fork. Betts is a member of the Hummer/Bird Study Group, Inc. and a
hummingbird enthusiast. "They are so responsive. They chatter. They
talk. They dance."
