Last summer, when the price of gas hit $4.22 a gallon, Craig
Sullivan parked his 1995 Chevrolet Suburban, which averaged 12 mpg.
"I couldn't afford to drive it," said Sullivan of Sandy. "Every
12 miles, I lost four bucks."
Sullivan wanted to get a smaller sports-utility vehicle but was
looking for a bargain. It came in the form of the U.S. Department of
Transportation's Car Allowance Rebate System, or "cash for
clunkers."
On Monday, Sullivan traded in the Suburban for a tax rebate of
$4,500 to purchase a Chevrolet Equinox, a midsize SUV that Sullivan
hopes will average about 25 mpg on the highway.
