As jet racers prepared for the final day of competition on the Kanawha River, Mother Nature decided to throw a cog into their gears.

Racing in the Toyota Governors Cup Pro Jet Ski Racing was limited to one day as overnight rain Saturday raised water levels and quickened currents in the Kanawha River and washed debris from the Kanawha and Elk rivers to the course at Magic Island.

"We still love this place and we feel this is a great place for a national championship, but in the interest of safety, we had to make this call," said A.J. Handler, managing director of Upstate Watercraft Promotions, who operated the event.
