Article: PHILANTHROPHY: ; McGees donating $900,000 statue to Clay Center

The 30-foot-wide hole workers are digging in the middle of the Clay Center's circular drive will soon hold a 65-foot tall abstract sculpture donated by John and Ruth McGee.

The as-yet-unnamed sculpture will be installed over a six- to seven-week period as parts of it arrive on tractor-trailers. A final unveiling celebration is expected during the week of Oct. 12.

Metalworking artist Albert Paley of Rochester, N.Y., was commissioned to create the structure after the McGees and a committee of Clay Center board members and art leaders interviewed Paley and two other artists. Paley is the first metal artist to receive the American Institute of Architecture's Lifetime Achievement Award.
