BOWLING GREEN, MO. - They live without electricity, indoor plumbing and telephones, but when it comes to their buggies, the Amish are willing to accept a bit of updating.

"We use fiberglass wheels, anymore," said Jacob Schwartz, who runs a buggy shop. "I get them from Indiana and put the steel rim and the hub on them. They're a lot better than wood. Wood warps with the weather. Fiberglass, it's no problem."

Jacob, his wife, Josephine, and their eight children are among the 65 or so Amish families who live in the rural farming community around Curryville, west of Bowling Green in Pike County. Visitors are invited to watch as Jacob restores buggies in his workshop or visit the general store ...
