I HAVE THIS thing for ancient fruits.

I figure if they've kept folks alive for five or so thousand years, they must be good. Such is the case with fresh figs. The first recorded mention of figs was about 4,500 hundred years ago, so you know they were around for longer than that.

My guess, the biggest key to the longevity of fresh figs is their nutrition. I'm thinking way back, there just was not the variety of fresh goodies around as we have today. And even if it was around, try transporting it. Camels are a tad slow.

So you had to get more nutritional bang for your buck -- hence figs. They are full of calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin C and -- always a favorite -- fiber. If you ...
