For many West Virginia companies, buying sugar soon could get pretty bittersweet.

Because of tariffs and import restrictions on sugar, many national companies are experiencing a severe shortage of the product.

Several companies are threatening to raise prices and lay off workers if the U.S. Department of Agriculture doesn't allow them to import more tariff-free sugar from countries like Brazil, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

A letter written to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack from companies like Kraft Foods Inc., General Mills Inc., Hershey Co. and Mars Inc. asked him to allow a quota increase for sugar imports so the nation would not "virtually run out of sugar."
