Stephen Ireland gave the Republic an ideal start here with a goal
after eight minutes, but three second-half goals for the home side
turned what had been a competitive match here into a rout. Richard
Dunne scored his first goal for the Republic of Ireland for more than
three years to bring his side level at half-time, but the central
defender undid his good work by being sent off in the closing stages.
By then, though, the Republic were well beaten. Three of Steve
Staunton's starting line-up were making their first competitive
