IF THE NORWEGIAN football commentator Bjorge Lillelien had been
on duty, he might have put it something like this: "Alex Salmond!
William Wallace! Robert the Bruce! Sean Connery! Mr Tunnock, the
Caramel Wafer king! Wee Jimmy Krankie! Maw Broon and all her weans!
Darius! Heather the Weather! Your boys took one hell of a beating!"
Sadly, Lillelien died a few years ago so we were spared a re-
working of his roll-call of English notables after Norway had
defeated the whiteshirts in a World Cup qualifier. But we should
have suffered in this way; our beating was greater. And I don't know
about the English, but in such situations we Scots actually need a
dose of masochism; this one certainly ...
