Much of rural Wisconsin could get improved broadband Internet access under various pitches for federal stimulus money.

Broadband is a high-speed Internet connection capable of moving large amounts of data through fiber-optic cables and other means. Currently, many rural residents only have dial-up Internet service, a slow-speed connection through telephone wires.

Residents and businesses in 26 Wisconsin counties could get broadband from Hilbert Communications of Green Bay if the company is successful in its pitch for stimulus funds, the company said.
