This is the season for Essex businesses to thrive. At least it usually is.

Summer is the time that people stop in for a river cruise, or head out on their boats, or kayak on the Essex River and stop to eat in the restaurants or browse the shops.

Because of the rough economy and lots of early-season rain, there has been less of that this year.

The fact that there are jackhammers pounding and lane closures clogging up Route 133 is just part of the equation.

Bob Coviello, owner of three Essex antique shops including Main Street Antiques, estimated that his business is off by more than half. "But it's not the road project," he said. "It's the economy."
