Two Jackson County men have been charged with animal cruelty after humane officers discovered nine horses in a field without proper food or water.

Sgt. J.F. Bare of the Jackson County Sheriff's Department filed the criminal complaint against Josh Butcher of Ravenswood and Eddie Jones of Fairplain after finding the horses in a meadow at Jones' Shinn Lane residence.

According to the complaint, filed Aug. 11, sheriff's deputies and humane officers had visited the property in May and again in July.

In May, Bare and Humane Officer Cindy Katris observed that the horses had no food or water. Their necks were thin and ribs on seven of the horses were very noticeable, they reported.
