Article: Summer safety at the top of list at La Mirada parks

LA MIRADA - When La Mirada Public Safety Officer Andrew Nunnally sees familiar park-goers riding a scooter, skateboard or bike without a helmet, he only needs to say three words.

"Remember the watermelon?"

It might not make sense to most people, but for kids in the city's Positive Alternatives and Recreation for Kids (PARK) program, it brings up vivid memories of this summer's Safety Thursdays, a one- hour weekly event aimed at discouraging risky youthful behavior.

To demonstrate the importance of wearing a helmet a few weeks ago, officers used a watermelon - one tucked safely inside a helmet, the other bare - to show what could happen in a fall if someone's head hit the floor.
