Canoeist convicted of fraud after faking his death concocts plan to sidestep prison rules and get his memoirs published

THE STORY of how John Darwin faked his own death gripped the world. His unlikely tale of pretending to drown in a canoe accident, using the money to fund a life of luxury in Panama, and then returning to Britain claiming to have amnesia had the makings of a good book.

That, it appears, was not lost on the man himself. Yesterday it emerged Darwin, who was convicted of fraud and sentenced to six years in prison in July 2008, intends to publish his story and is writing his memoirs from his jail cell.
