DEVON-SENT and far from home, last week's Tiverton Town programme
has arrived. A covering note points towards a two-page feature
headed "Sam and Goliath."
The article describes Mike Amos as a "hero" and as editor of The
Northern Echo.
One of these claims is highly debatable, the other preposterous.
"Sam" is Sam Gordon, Tow Law Town's mascot for four years until
season 1997-98, by which time he was ten.
"Goliath" is the foe-fum FA, which refused him permission to lead
out the team at the FA Vase final at Wembley.
The FA said it had never had mascots at Wembley. Too much else
going on. No matter that Sam had missed just seven games in four
years, fewer than any of the players, and in ...
