In the final hours of the "Cash for Clunkers" program, auto
dealers throughout the area were more likely to be doing paperwork
than selling a last-minute sedan.
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced Thursday it would
end the stimulus-funded program at 8 p.m. yesterday, sending dealers
scuttling to file their applications for reimbursement of the money
they fronted customers who traded in cars for newer, more fuel-
efficient models. The government warned dealers to avoid new sales
over the weekend unless all paperwork was ready for submission.
The program website has at times struggled with heavy traffic,
and federal officials extended the filing deadline to noon today
