The final chapter of the Thistlerose Pet Cemetery saga is being written this week with shovels, ground-penetrating radar and sighs of relief from owners of long-deceased dogs and cats.

Removal of about 180 caskets is under way at the defunct animal cemetery and kennel at S. 68th St. and W. Loomis Road in Greendale.

It's slow going. Each grave is dug with hand tools to avoid damaging the mostly plastic caskets. Some of the boxes weigh 100 pounds or more. On Monday, 19 sets of remains were unearthed and loaded into a trailer.
