An NHS patient spoke of his disgust yesterday after he underwent surgery to have his appendix removed - only to find it was still there one month later.

Mark Wattson, 35, went under the knife in July after a ruptured appendix left him writhing in agony.

Doctors told him the appendectomy was a success and he was discharged from Great Western Hospital (GWH) in Swindon.

But one month later Mark collapsed in agony and was rushed back into hospital - where doctors told him his appendix was still there - and had burst.

Surgeons performed a second operation to remove his appendix but could not explain why the organ was not taken out during the first procedure.
