Article: Tree sellers let the fir fly; Real or fake? 'Peace on Earth' doesn't describe plant purveyors

There's not much holiday cheer these days between Christmas tree growers and the makers of artificial trees.

Take the Web site of the National Christmas Tree Association, for example. It has a computer game called "Attack of the Mutant Artificial Trees," in which players can pelt fake evergreens with snowballs while being careful to avoid the elves.

"The artificial trees have mutated and are sucking the spirit out of Christmas," the game says.

The game, although lighthearted, is hardly in the Christmas spirit, say artificial tree manufacturers.

And the fact that some people depict artificial trees as unsafe doesn't pass the "sniff test," says Thomas Gorman, president and CEO of Balsam Hill ...
