If "flat" is the new "up," then Oklahoma's state-run golf courses are performing well compared to golf courses nationwide.

With a 3-percent increase in rounds played in 2009, the seven state-controlled golf courses in Oklahoma are still turning a profit, which golf courses in other states cannot say.

"We've seen a slight increase in rounds played this year," said Hardy Watkins, executive director of the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department. "People are seeing that we're a more affordable option, and each one of the state's courses are different. We're more affordable as a state system than private courses."
