You couldn't make it up. Two critics joined my table in a crowded
cafe at the Edinburgh Festival this week. I knew they were critics;
they were dressed all in black, had shocks of grey hair and both had
man-bags bursting with timetables and programmes.
They reminded me of an arty-farty version of the two old men that
sat in the box in the Muppet Show.
Having only a few minutes between shows they were having to
voraciously scoff soft rolls for sustenance while they compared
notes. They were really cramming them in. Subsequently their
conversation was somewhat doughy!
Critic one: Mmm, mmm!
Critic two: What I didn't understand was whose was the second
grave? Critic one: Mmm, mmm mmm! Ralph ...
