Andrew Lloyd Webber clips along a sidewalk here in burgundy
loafers, his hands stuffed into the pockets of a green blazer. His
latest production, a revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The Sound
of Music," will open in the West End in a few hours, and on this
cool November day, Britain's most successful contemporary composer
seems to have a touch of opening-night jitters.
The musical stars a 23-year-old newcomer who was chosen on a
television competition show. Selecting the actress on live TV for
the role of Maria, played in the movie by Julie Andrews, was Lloyd
Webber's idea, and Britons lapped it up like cream on scones.
