First base coach Perry Hill has turned down the Pirates' initial
offer to return next season. General manager Neal Huntington met
with the coaches this past weekend in Milwaukee and offered them all
contracts for 2010. Huntington will ask ownership for permission to
counteroffer with a higher salary for Hill. "Our conversations with
the coaches are ongoing," Huntington said. "We prefer to keep the
nature of those conversations internal." Team president Frank
Coonelly did not return a phone call for comment. Hill, 57, is one
of the most acclaimed infield instructors in baseball. He joined the
staff this past offseason.
