Concord's pay-as-you-throw program has a lot of people thinking about what they toss in the trash each week - and what they don't have to. Kitchen waste, for example. It got Joe Colby, who runs a Boscawen sawmill with his brother, Jim, thinking about how he could help.

Many people living in downtown Concord have little space in their yards for composting. And many compost bins on the market cost $100 or more. So Colby came up with a compact, low-cost alternative: a slatted white pine box that lets in the air needed to turn cabbage leaves and carrot tops into compost but keeps the critters out.
