Tekleab Kassaye Tomlinson was an Ethiopian political refugee when
he arrived in the United States in 1962 with little more than his
grandfather's pocket watch and a desire to eliminate the type of
poverty and hunger he had escaped.
He carved out a life and a career for himself at the United
Nations before he found his way in 1975 to the UN's World Food
Programme, where he brought his originality and problem-solving
ability to bear in a close working relationship with the program's
executive director. Much of his time was spent clarifying the
program's mission and its means of addressing world hunger.
