OPENING up and developing overseas markets has been part of Scotland's economic lifeblood for as long as Scotland has existed. The national archives show Robert the Bruce taking a break from splitting skulls to pen an ingratiating pitch to the merchant guilds of Germany.

Even within that long perspective, few have been more active and effective at the sharp end of this national strategy than Murdo Beaton, international trade executive for Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce.

Beaton, 65, whose working life has outlasted at least one nominal "retirement", is seen by colleagues, and by business people who have sought his help, as one of the unsung heroes of the Scottish trading economy.
