When Roger Federer broke into tears after his Australian Open defeat by Rafael Nadal in January, it looked like the floodgates had opened.

Federer's waterworks seemed to signify that he sensed his reign at the top of world tennis was over after Nadal's third Grand Slam title in seven months.

"God, it's killing me," blurted Federer in a surprisingly public revelation of his torment.
