Far from the bustle of Belmont Street, a soaring totem pole
towers over the landscape behind the Brockton Veterans
Administration Hospital. Its age-old symbols are draped in red,
white, and blue, hallmarks of strength and sacrifice for those who
have seen war.
This 30-foot, 3,000-pound newcomer joins two smaller versions
under renovation on the leafy grounds of the 1950s-era brick campus.
In the bigger picture, they honor the 190,000 Native American
service veterans in the United States; closer to home, it is a
tribute to those maimed by war receiving treatment at the facility.
The new installation is part of a pond renovation project at the
