Chardonnay is the grape variety we love to hate, but it remains
the white wine of choice for most consumers.
Chardonnay's grip on white wine is attributable to several
reasons. First, chardonnay has had more time to establish itself -
grapes like sauvignon blanc are becoming more well known as New
Zealand and other regions emerge. Second, consumers are very brand-
conscious with their chardonnays. They recognize Sonoma-Cutrer,
Rodney Strong and Kendall-Jackson.
In 2007 chardonnay accounted for more than 80 percent of market
share of what was consumed in restaurants, according to Wine &
Spirits magazine. That's a significant increase from the previous
year.
