Guitarist Joe Negri considered the talent of the late Sandy
Staley and said, "Whenever I was doing a concert and needed a
vocalist, there was only one to call."
Other musicians and jazz observers spoke with the same regard
about Sandra Staley Vaporetti, who died at 69 on Tuesday in Forbes
Hospice in Oakland.
Ms. Staley, of Brackenridge, had been dealing with emphysema,
heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease since 2004.
"She knew the music and the musicians," said Tony Mowod, jazz
announcer for WDUQ-FM and founder of the Pittsburgh Jazz Society.
Ms. Staley is a member of that group's Hall of Fame.
