Will Shay lives within striking distance of the former
Westmoreland Glass factory in the Grapeville area of Hempfield.
He's concerned that one day, the tall, brick cooling towers at
the site will collapse from the vibrations of freight trains that
whiz by several times each day.
If that happens when a train is speeding by, the impact could
send rail cars crashing into his home on Chambers Avenue, he said.
"The trains create a lot of vibrations, and my house is the first
house a train is going through," Shay said. "The site has been a
nuisance for years."
Hempfield Township supervisors will decide Sept. 28 whether to
declare the former glassworks a public hazard so it can be torn
down.
