Harold M. "Hack" Schoolman, 85, who retired in 1999 as deputy
director for research and education at the National Library of
Medicine in Bethesda, died Aug. 17 at his home in Washington after a
heart attack.
Dr. Schoolman joined the National Library of Medicine in 1970 and
helped in the expansion of the National Network of Libraries of
Medicine, which provides wide access to biomedical information, and
the Unified Medical Language System. He did research on intellectual
property in the health field.
Dr. Schoolman was born in Chicago. He graduated from the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and was a 1950 graduate
of the University of Illinois medical school in Chicago. He served
