Clement T. Hertslet, 80, who spent many years as a research
analyst for the Defense Department, died Aug. 13 at the National
Lutheran Home & Village in Rockville. He had Parkinson's disease.
Mr. Hertslet joined the Defense Department in 1962 and was a
senior research analyst on matters related to China. He retired in
1989.
Clement Townsend Hertslet was born in Kansas City, Mo., and
served in the Marine Corps in the 1940s. He was a graduate of what
is now the University of Central Missouri and received a master's
degree in geography from Oklahoma State University in 1954.
From 1955 to 1961, he taught geography and world history in a
public high school on the island of Guam.
