IN June I made my annual trip to the Andalucian coast in Southern
Spain.
Its towns of Tarifa and Algeciras are major transit points to
North Africa and the bustling port of Tangiers which lies a few
miles across the Mediterranean.
Every day in these narrow straits, Spanish coastguard vessels and
military helicopters are on the lookout for boatloads of illegal
immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa.
The increased security presence of the last few years is also
aimed at monitoring any nfiltration into Spain by Islamist
terrorist groups or individuals coming from Morocco and North
